Abstract

Introduction: Breastfeeding constitutes a basic process in human evolution, so fundamental and physiological, that it lays the foundation for the growth and development of each individual.

Objective: To analyze the factors associated with the level of knowledge about breastfeeding in postpartum women at the Hospital de Apoyo II -2 Sullana, Piura, Peru, in the period from September to November 2023.

Methods: The study had a quantitative and observational approach, with an analytical and cross-sectional orientation. A validated instrument was used and a sample of 217 puerperal women was used. The data were processed with Excel and Spss programs and the hypothesis comparison test. Chi-square and prevalence ratios were used to determine associations. Tables were made showing the percentage obtained for each variable of interest in the study.

Results: It was observed that 57.45% of the puerperal women surveyed were between 25 and 59 years of age; 78.34% were cohabitants; 61.29% had secondary education; 62.21% resided in urban areas; 86.64% were housewives. In addition, 70% reached an intermediate level of knowledge; 26% a low and 4% high level.

Conclusions: Being a housewife increases the prevalence of having an adequate level of knowledge, which was shown to be statistically significant.
