Implementation of an accelerated recovery protocol in abdominal hysterectomy

Abstract

Introduction: management in elective surgery is in the process of changing. In the 90s Henrik Kehlet proposed the concept of Fast Track Surgery. Gynecological surgeries are frequent, it has the same behavior in Cuba and Matanzas, reporting that 19.3% of elective surgeries in 2017 at the Cárdenas hospital correspond to these pathologies.
Objetive: to determine the effectiveness of the implementation of accelerated recovery protocols in patients undergoing abdominal hysterectomy, treated at the Cárdenas hospital.
Method: a comparison study of two cohorts was carried out on the implementation of accelerated recovery protocols in gynecological surgery at the Cárdenas hospital, from January 2017 to January 2021. The variables opening the oral route, ambulation, pain, complications, overall compliance with the strategies.
Results: in the ERAS group, the opening time of the oral route prevailed in the first 4 h, mobilization in the first 3 hours, postoperatively, minimal pain reported and only nausea reported as complications, while in the control group it took longer to opening of the oral route and ambulation, a higher incidence of pain and complications was reported.
Conclusions: using accelerated recovery protocols produce favorable results for the recovery of patients with abdominal hysterectomy.
