Abstract

Introduction: Puerperal infection is one of the most common complications in obstetrics and it may cause morbidity in extreme cases mortality in affected patients. Objectives: to characterize epidemiological and clinical features related to puerperal infection. Method: A crossed sectional study was carried out. The universe included 63 patients who developed puerperal infection from January to December 2022 in “Ramón Gonzalez Coro” Hospital. The information was obtained from the clinical record and epidemiological survey, A form was created for the collection of data. Results: The general infection rate was 1,38 per 100 admissions. Complications were more common in women who underwent cesarean section. Predominant risks factors were anemia postpartum hemorrhage and vaginal infection prior to vaginal delivery. The first cause was endometritis, and Escherichia coli was isolated in 38,3% of all patients. Hysterectomy was required in 3,17% of the patients. Conclusions: infection was more common in patients who had a caesarian section. Critically ill patients rate decreased compared to previous years.
