Maternal mortality in Villa Clara, 2000 - 2019

Abstract

Introduction: Maternal mortality can be considered a publichealthproblem. Objectives: to characterize maternal mortality in Villa Clara 2000-2019. Method: descriptive, cross-sectional, observational study in a series of cases. Summary measures were used; normality and homogeneity test based on the chi-square distribution were applied. Results: No maternal deaths were reported in the years 2004, 2010 and 2019. Direct maternal death predominated in almost two thirds of the patients. The mean age was around 28. More than half of the deaths occurred in an intensive care unit. Postpartum complications were the most common cause, amongst the most common can be mentioned hemorrhagic and thromboembolic disorders. Conclusions: More than half of all deaths were of direct cause, during childbearing age, the majority die in the intensive care units. Most deaths occurred during the postpartum period, and the most common were hemorrhage and thromboembolic disorders.
