Abstract

Introduction: conventional risk factors cannot explain all cases of sporadic breast cancer. Infections caused by the mouse mammary tumor virus, Epstein-Barr virus and human papillomavirus have been suggested to be potential risk factors for this condition.
Objective: to update the information on the role of some viral infections in the development of breast cancer.
Methods: a review was conducted of papers about the subject published in several databases (PubMed, Medline, BioMed Central and SciELO).
Conclusions: despite the fact that criteria on the subject are controversial, some results suggest that the action of these viruses may contribute to the development of malignant breast disease.
