Abstract

Introduction: Doppler flowmetry of the umbilical artery of the mother-fetus binomial is a fundamental tool in the diagnosis of fetal growth restriction, allowing to classify the risks of neonatal morbidity and mortality.
Objective: To analyze the evolution of newborns with antecedents of Doppler alterations of the umbilical artery.
Method: A descriptive, ambispective study was conducted on 48 newborns admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit were over a period of five years (January 2011-December 2015). For the analysis of the data, descriptive summary measures, percent, simple linear regression were practiced. Prevalence ratio with 95 % confidence intervals of Wolf, according to reference level, and the linear trend test were also used.
Results: The overall incidence was 0.3 % (48/17161), hypertensive disorders predominated in mothers whose newborns had history of diastole absence (84.2 %). The weight, the gestational age were much lower and severe delayed intrauterine growth (60.7 %) was most frequent in this group. Morbidity predominated in newborns with diastole absence. Mortality was 21.4 % (6/28) in the group with no diastole.
Conclusions: The absence of diastole obtained according to Doppler flowmetry was related to the occurrence of perinatal adverse events such as high morbidity and neonatal mortality.
