Clinico-Epidemiological, Colposcopic and Cytological Characteristics in HIV / AIDS Patients in A Cervix Pathology Clinic

Abstract

Introduction: Women with human immunodeficiency virus infection more frequently develop cervical intraepithelial lesions associated with human papillomavirus and invasive cervical carcinoma. The latter has been part of the defining diseases of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome since 1993.
Objective: To show the clinical, epidemiological, colposcopic and cytological behavior in women infected by the human immunodeficiency virus in Santiago de Cuba province.
Methods: An observational, descriptive, cross-sectional study was carried out in 73 women with HIV / AIDS treated in the Cervix Pathology consultation at Dr. Juan Bruno Zayas Alfonso General Hospital in Santiago de Cuba province, from March 2013 to May 2017. The scientific methods were theoretical, empirical and statistical. The variables used were age, associated risk factors, symptoms, cytology, colposcopy and biopsy.
Results: Most of the patients were in the age range of 25 to 45 years and began sexual intercourse early, they had history of at least one delivery and were diagnosed with the human immunodeficiency virus more than five years ago. 24.6% of the patients in the study had bacterial vaginosis. the colposcopic findings suggested a high-grade intraepithelial lesion in12.3%, invasive cancer was diagnosed in 2.7%, and 28.7% of the patients had high and low grade cytologies.
Conclusions: Routine screening with colposcopy, cytology and histology in patients with diagnosis of human immunodeficiency virus infection can contribute to the early diagnosis and prevention of cervical cancer.
