Abstract

Introduction: Invasive breast cancer is the most frequent tumor in women and the leading cause of cancer death in this sex worldwide. It is a malignant lesion of the mammary epithelium, of still unknown etiology, but some risk factors that predispose to
the disease are known.
Objective: To determine the histological behavior of invasive breast carcinoma in women who underwent surgery.
Methods: A retrospective longitudinal study was carried out with 121 patients with diagnosis of invasive breast carcinoma, who underwent surgery at Dr. Agostinho Neto General Teaching Hospital in Guantánamo province from 2015 to 2016. For the analysis
and processing of the results, empirical methods were used such as observation and documentary study. Statistical mathematical methods such as percentage analysis and the calculation of the Chi-squared value were used. Age group, risk factors, histological type and grade, clinical stage, and immunohistochemistry were specified.
Results: The histological behavior of breast cancer in Cuba was similar to that described in other countries. The group of 60 years of age and older prevailed, 55 patients (45.5%), associated with overweight which is another risk factor, 33 patients (27.3%). Infiltrating
ductal carcinoma (75.2%), histological grade II, 78 (64.5%) and stage II B, 39 (32.2%) were the anatomopathological characteristics that prevailed in this study.
Conclusions: Breast cancer is a growing health problem, hence its investigation in Guantanamo should be continued. New variables such as survival and immunohistochemical tests, to determine the Ki67 proliferation index, should also be incorporated to characterize the disease in this territory, as well as establishing health policies, to improve the health status of the population with respect to breast cancer, diagnosis and prognosis.
